ManBirdPig Flu

Dan's post from yesterday's contest yielded this winning comment...

Comment by The Monster on 4/29 @ 6:47 am #

The Paris-based World Organization for Animal Health also objected to the name, saying the virus contains avian and human components and no pig so far has been found ill with the disease.

To recognize these diverse components, there is but one name that can do it justice:

ManBirdPig.

Because it’s half human flu, half bird flu, and half swine flu. I’m super cereal.

So, we've officially renamed the politically incorrect 'Swine Flu' (my unsuccessful entry was 'White Horse Flu', given that the 1st Horseman of the Apocalypse (pestilence) rode a white horse).

Now, the only question is: is that flying pig male or female?? )

An interesting weekend for Alabama

This for Glen Dean...

click to embiggen.

Besides Andre Smith going to the Bengals, other news from Alabama includes the spectacular near-disastrous finish to the Aaron's 499 race at Talladega yesterday. Here's a pic that embodies that finish, from a lucky fan's perspective...

'The Truth': 100 days in and 'The Stupid' just keeps flowing

This image/painting was created by one Michael D'Anturono, to commemorate The O!ne's 100 first days in office. It'll be unveiled in Union Square in New York...

"The 30" x 54" acrylic painting on canvas depicts President Obama appearing much like Jesus Christ on the Cross; atop his head, a crown of thorns. Behind him, the dark veil being lifted (or lowered) on the Presidential Seal. But is he revealing or concealing and is he being crucified or glorified?

"D'Antuono insists that this piece is a mirror; reflecting the personal opinions and emotions of the viewer; that "The Truth" like beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. D'Antuono expects that individual interpretations will vary as widely as they do in the political arena. The work will be seen by one viewer at a time behind a voting booth-inspired public installation."

Well, I find this just a bit fascinating.

Mr. Grumpy (in comments at SondraK's post), asks "Anybody have a BIG jar of urine we can put display that in?"

Well, just so happens...

Bring Out your Dead! Swine Flu is back

We in the U.S. haven't seen an outbreak of Swine Flu since 1976.

then
now
With the Swine flu outbreak in Mexico city scaring the populace to, well, death, we're seeing a more modern reaction to this potentially grave situation...

Swine-flu outbreak chilling Mexico City

Anxious residents stay home, retail businesses suffer

MEXICO CITY - The Mexican capital was a fearful place on Saturday, as residents donned surgical masks, avoided shaking hands or simply stayed home amid a swine-flu outbreak that has killed at least 20 people and perhaps as many as 81 across Mexico.

Mexico City has become the epicenter of the sickness, which may have infected 1,324 people nationwide by Saturday night.

Mexican President Felipe Calderón issued a decree allowing the federal health department to enter homes and forcibly quarantine people, and the authorities ordered all schools closed until May 6 in the capital and neighboring Mexico state.

The capital of 20 million people usually bustles with people on the weekends, but it was strangely quiet on Saturday. Many pedestrians wore surgical masks, as health officials have urged.
How serious is the Mexican populace taking this? Well, soccer rules in that country; people can still watch soccer games, but only at home, on TV. The games are continuing in their huge stadiums; which are empty by Government decree except for the players, coaches and television crews.

How long, I wonder, before we here in the U.S. break out the blue surgical masks, cancel our public events and stay at home? There are 11 confirmed cases in the U.S., in southern California and San Antonio.

Currently, g00gle's Flu Trends shows the U.S. has a LOW flu activity rating. The CDC is still investigating, but has some helpful stay-well hints...

There are everyday actions people can take to stay healthy.

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.

Try to avoid close contact with sick people.

  • Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing of infected people.
  • If you get sick, CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
Thanks for that.

Oh, I've got some kind of funk; coughing, sneezing &c. but this is the season for allergies. Of which I've never had before, but there's always a first time. Thanks, elm pollen.

Practical Gun Control: Don't be found dead in an alley strangled with your own pantyhose.

Here are some tips:

  1. Practice shooting positions, especially field positions.

  2. Know your sights. Only one alignment will bring perfect results.

  3. Breathe calmly and deeply, exhale, then hold for the trigger squeeze

  4. Know your trigger, squeeze it slowly and firmly.

Titans select Kenny Britt, tough-as-nails WR from Rutgers

Kenny Britt, selected in the first round #30 overall, is a surprise. Usually the Titans disdain 1st round receivers. I'd expected Vandy cornerback D.J Moore, but I guess Heimerdinger wins this one.

Check out this hit; remember #88 is a wide receiver.

Top Ten Tortures: the CIA's methods revealed

Oh boy. I'm hurting, just thinking of these cruelties.

1. Attention grasp

Grasping the suspect with both hands - one hand on each side of the collar opening - in one quick motion. In the same motion, the suspect is pulled towards the interrogator.

2. Walling

The interrogators construct a flexible false wall, but do not tell the suspect it is fake. The individual is then placed with his or her heels touching the wall. The suspect is then pulled forward, and then quickly pushed back against the wall.

It is designed so that the suspect's shoulder blades hit the wall. The individual's neck is supported to stop whiplash.

The suspect is allowed to rebound off the wall - which makes a loud noise. The theory is that the noise will cause the suspect to think they are being harmed, when in fact no damage is being done.

3. Facial hold

One open palm is placed on either side of the suspect's face - to keep their head immobile. The fingertips are kept away from the individual's eyes. It is designed to intimidate.

4. Insult slap

The interrogator slaps the suspect's face, with fingers slightly spread. The slap is aimed for the area between the chin and the ear. The aim of the slap is not to cause long-lasting pain, but to shock, surprise or humiliate.

5. Cramped confinement

The suspect is placed in a dark and confined space. Confinement in a larger space can last up to 18 hours, in a smaller space it is supposed to be less than two hours.

6. Wall standing

Used to induce muscle fatigue. The suspect stands about four or five feet from the wall, with his feet spread approximately to shoulder width. Arms are stretched out in front of them, with fingers resting on the wall. The fingers support all the body weight, and they are not allowed to move.

7. Stress positions

A variety of positions may be used, such as sitting on the floor with legs extended straight out in front with arms raised above the head. Again, they are designed to create the physical discomfort of muscle fatigue.

8. Sleep deprivation

Used to reduce the suspect's ability to think on their feet, create discomfort, and encourage them to cooperate. The CIA was asking for this to happen for up to 11 days.

9. Insects placed in a confinement box

The suspect is placed in a confined space with a seemingly lethal insect. They are told is it lethal, even though it is actually harmless.

Strangely, the CIA had indicated that they wished to place Zubaydah in confinement with a caterpillar, as he appeared to have a fear of such creatures.

10. Waterboarding

The individual is bound securely to a bench, with their feet elevated. A cloth is placed over the forehead and eyes.

Water is then poured on the cloth, and the cloth itself is lowered to cover the mouth and nose.

Air flow is then restricted for up to 40 seconds at a time; this causes an increase in carbon dioxide in the individual's blood. It is designed to simulate suffocation and panic.

Those Poor Guys we tortured. I feel so despondent now.

I know, let's ask these folks for their opinion of the 'torture' of al-Qaeda's minions, and of our possible ability to gather information to determine whether or not there's some sort of new terrorist attack in the planning stages?

What do you mean, we can't?

NO, heck no, and yes!

How do these freaks find these things out, I wonder?

Well, sorry, I've already got the girl of my dreams. But Thanks! for askin'.

And only one candle?! nope, but thanks for being nice and all...

Here's something I wanted to post: the New York City Tea Party, a closeup of a couple decent signs. Click to embiggen.

July 4, 2009: Happy Birthday, U.S.A.! 233 years old.

But, now, are we on the verge of the birth of the Fourth American Republic?
The Special Interest State that has shaped American life for 70 years is dying. What comes next is uncertain, but there are grounds for optimism.

The United States has been called the oldest nation in the world, in the sense that it has operated the longest without a major upheaval in its basic institutional structure.

From one perspective, this characterization is fair. The nation still rests on the Constitution of 1787, and no other government can trace its current charter back so far. Since then, France has had a monarchy, two empires, and five republics. England fudges by never writing down its constitutional arrangements, but the polity of Gordon I is remote from that of George III. China’s political convolutions defy summary.

Read the rest of that excellent essay. I'm still digesting the ramifications thereof, and may post more on it later.

The Fall of the Lizard King: Charles Johnson, exposed

In today's Washington Independent, David Weigel writes

Civil War Raging in Right-Wing Blogosphere

Terrorism-Watching Conservative Blogs Split Over Accusations of Bigotry and Treason

When Johnson began blogging about Islam and terrorism after 9/11, he inspired untold other supporters of an aggressive war on terror to start their own Websites, link up, and push back against “Dhimmitude” — organizations and foreign policy decision makers that were “soft” on terrorism. Now, some of his followers have started blogs that track Johnson’s “madness,” while a video that portrays Johnson as Adolf Hitler going mad in his bunker makes the rounds.
My thoughts have always been that Islam, the religion, is in need of serious reform. That reform's been long in coming; some 8 centuries late, and there's no real signs that reform is in the works. It's still far too easy for Islamic jihadists to sway the minds of the ignorant who aren't allowed to read anything past the Koran, and must pray to a fallen meteor ensconced in Mecca five times a day.

Charles Johnson is an asshole, though, and a particularly nassty one. But enough of that: these videos, put out by Pamela Geller (of whom I have no opinion, having never read much of her stuff) are hilarious, and put CJ in proper perspective. Watch the second one at least; the first and third are good, but the second one is most telling (That's why I made it bigger ).

GOD vs. Science: Paging Charles Johnson

Assault Weapons Ban Debate: NRA's Wayne LaPierre puts it to PA Gov. Ed Rendell

This, from CBS, on Face the Nation (Sunday, 4/19/09).

Wayne's points: prosecute, prosecute, prosecute the criminals. Criminals are criminals, let's enforce the existing laws. There's plenty of laws. Rendell wants to re-ban 'assault' weapons, re-ban high-capacity magazines, and eventually ban handguns. Because he is a deep leftist, and that's their agenda.

Oh, and Rendell: THE 2ND AMENDMENT HAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH DUCK BLINDS OR HUNTING.

Thank God we have the NRA to fight for us against dirtbags like Rendell.

Carrie Prejean gets the left and the gays excited. And that's not a good thing for her Miss USA hopes...but, who really cares what they think?

Good for her! Carrie answered that flaming idiot Perez Hilton's question perfectly...
When asked by judge Perez Hilton, an openly gay gossip blogger, whether she believed in gay marriage, Miss California, Carrie Prejean, said "We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite. And you know what, I think in my country, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody out there, but that's how I was raised."
(Emphasis mine.) And she's not backing down, either; after the crown went to Miss North Carolina (Carrie Prejean is the first runner up) Carrie remarked...
It did cost me my crown,” Carrie told Billy, who co-hosted the ceremony, on Monday. “I wouldn’t have had it any other way. I said what I feel. I stated an opinion that was true to myself and that’s all I can do.

It is a very touchy subject and he is a homosexual and I see where he was coming from and I see the audience would’ve wanted me to be more politically correct,” she added. “But I was raised in a way that you can never compromise your beliefs and your opinions for anything.

As a spokesperson for conservatism, I would trade Meghan McCain for Carrie Prejean any day of the week, given Meghan is a soft 'Progressive Republican'.

And, to top it all (and really asplode some lefty heads) Carrie is a person of faith...
"I knew there were secular judges, but I felt I needed to express my passion for the Lord."
No wonder the left is ready to kill her.

One of the the biggest surprises for me is that someone this young and talented, and yet still be conservative, could hail from California. Who knew?

The Video CNN doesn't want you to see

H/T Patterico..
I’m sick of people knocking embarrassing videos off YouTube with bogus copyright violation claims.

The latest culprit is CNN, a network that was recently embarrassed by a video of reporter Susan Roesgen cutting off tea-party protestors in Chicago, and assailing them with silly liberal talking points. The blog Founding Bloggers showed up on scene and caught her in further arguments with angry citizens who noted her biased coverage.

...

So what can be done? Well, Founding Bloggers reports that another blogger grabbed a copy and posted it to YouTube. Time to repost it:

From that link, some interesting Poll data...

Glenn Beck gives Charles Johnson (Little Green Footballs) his comeuppance (or, how Queeg suddenly became inconsequential)

At about 7:34 minutes in.

Backstory: Charles Johnson is not a conservative blogger. After 9/11, he joined ranks with Republicans as a convenience, because that was the right thing to do; he did some good things, most notably dissolving Dan Rather in a vat of acid (Charles got his 15-minute fame boost from that worthy episode) and he helped define the meaning of Islamofascism for many on the right. But things started going downhill at LGF just recently: people started seeing Charles Johnson jump on the anti-religion (oh, but religion is fine; I just hate evil Creationists!) bandwagon. In his zeal to promote the religion of Science (he wants to live forever, and how else to do that unless Science creates some Magic that'll extend his life? Evil Creationists, with their anti-science anti-evolution agenda might get in the way of Science, and the clock is ticking, don't you know?)

His LGF blog is tightly controlled; you can't post a message without having an 'account', and 'accounts' are given (and maintained) only for people who slavishly agree with...Charles Johnson. Nary a contrary word, or your account is closed, and you are banned. KOS and DU run similar memes in their posting requirements; but you'd expect a more 'open' approach on our side, wouldn't you?

Of course I had that inevitable run-in with Charles, over religion. I can't abide a snotty atheist, sorry, and Charles is front-and-center atheist. I now read Gagdad Bob instead of LGF (Gagdad has perfectly denominated Charles as "Queeg", btw; expect a pshop of that concept coming soon~!).

Here's a comment someone left at LGF last December (my last day reading that rag). I copied it to a notepad, refreshed the browser window to get the permalink, and poof! Charles had deleted the comment and banned the commenter.
This is your site Charles, and you can do want you want with it. But I have been a member here a long time, and it is quite obvious the mission of this site has changed. You may have always been an Atheist/Agnostic/Flying Spaghetti Monster type of guy, but this constant barrage against believers is fairly recent. I just wonder if you would explain why? You probably have done this, I would not have seen it because I have not been coming around here anymore, you are no longer in "my five" as it were.

I remember when this site was a big deal in the conservative/pro Israel world. Now I never see references to LGF from the MSM or even conservative sites. I am sure you know better than I do that the site has suffered. You simply can not be pro Amrerica, pro Conservatism, pro Israel, and anti-believers. Doing this makes the list of potential followers quite small. Again, this is your site, but we who have been here some time notice the change. I guess I should respect you more because this is "not good for business", so you must be doing it out of real conviction. I would be interested in hearing why you take every chance to attack believers and are willing to go from a big fish in a big pond to a very small fish in a pond with no other fish.

I guess this could and maybe has become an atheist site, and maybe you will find enough of them that are conservative, I doubt it but it is possible i suppose. But to anyone who was not here during the heyday of this site, this was not the type of stuff that went on back then.

Tom 321
I haven't been back to LGF since.

Tennessee Tax Day Tea Party Protest Photos (Got Teabag? ) UPDATE: Flickr Photostream

Twenty five photos from Nashville's Tea Party; chosen for their interest to me.

An impressive turnout, I'd say. Reminiscent of the 'horn honking' days, when we protested a State Income Tax proposal in 2000.

This is about the photos. Click on any image for a larger (sometimes a very large) image.

If you're in an image, e-mail or comment and I'll send you a copy of the original shot (blogger destroys photos, really; these are just low-rent placeholders. I've better archives.)

Had to be a Teleprompter poster in there somewhere!
