Saturday Night Video.

Happyfeet says this is his favorite video ever. The video's info screen claims this is the 'Best music video ever.'

The Sound of Musik, by Falco.

Personally, I'd never heard of Falco before. He reminds me of a cross between Michael Jackson and that strange dude who doesn't have a name anymore but was once known as 'Prince'. And with the sunglasses, he looks like he's one step away from Scientology. Careful with that, Falco, from Scientology you'll never recover. It will eat your head.

(Why does it sound like the backup vocalists are actually singing "the sound of pussy?)

No, this wouldn't be my favorite video.

Check out this site: some Pink Floyd podcasts. Brain Damage. Great stuff, with this way-cool photo I had to steal, and turn into this...

James Douglas (Jim) Morrison, with his girlfriend Pamela Susan Courson (the eventual heir to his works -- but not for long; Pamela died of a heroin overdose only a couple years after Jim died.

Now here's a real music video. Learn something, Falco.

Lying Phil Bredesen vetoes Concealed Carry expansion

Bredesen lied.

Just goes to show that one cannot trust a Progressive Democrat. They will, like sheep, herd to their core (leftist) principles no matter what promises they make. Bredesen, like almost all Democrats before him, has conflated criminals with law-abiding citizens just to pander to the core (Democrat) pro-gun-control principle: guns are best kept away from private citizens; only Daddy Big Government should be trusted with armaments. Serpas, too, another snake in the grass; he is little more than a report-filer who cannot prevent crime but instead wants to be the only go-to 'protection' available to citizens. Grab a clip board and file a report, Serpas; that's your only true function. That's where you shine. But unless you avail yourself to an elected position (where, you know, citizens can vote for you or not) then leave policy decisions to your betters. Serpant.

Bredesen is a liar who was rebuffed by the Obama administration (he really wanted that HHS appointment) and hopefully his political career is winding down. May he retire and not trouble us anymore. If he does raise his head out of his bunker, I'll be the first to donate to whatever opponent he has in whatever race he joins.

Sonia Sotomayor ...no, no, that's Simona Halep, to get Breast Reduction Surgery. (Sonia, though, needs some RACIST! reductions)

Romanian tennis star Simona Halep (photo, above) wants 'em out of the way. The ponderousness of all of that swinging, swaying momentum(s); those inertia of dual dueling motions. Slowing down her returns, she says...
"I do not believe that physical appearance has an effect on performance, so I help with anything in the sport. My mind bust when I go on the field and even if I were sporting, I would have felt very good. (My Breasts) inconvenience me, it's very hard with them. It's a weight in addition to confound me speed response. I can not go on very well. Shoot me down. Nothing in life is not like me even though sport was not all I was doing surgery", revealed Halep. "Surgical intervention should take place last year, but probably will use it in autumn, because the postponement might cause problems in the column."
Spinal column, I'm assuming. Not being an avid tennis watcher.

There are southern California (well, to be fair, anywhere) debutantes who would kill for a matching set like those.

Oh, and Sonia Sotomayor is a member of the RACIST! group La Raza (means "The Race"; as a motto (since denied, but never disproven "For the race everything, outside the race nothing".)

That sort of association would've disqualified an unempathic white guy, most likely.

Squalidmayo ...er, Sotlemoyer ..no, it's Sotomayor.

Is she really racist? I thought she was simply an empathic anglophobic man-hater.

I like this reaction, from Lisa Schifferen...
The worst thing about the identity politics surrounding Sonia Sotomayor's nomination is not that she is a token or a political chit doled out to Hispanics -- though she is clearly that. Political considerations are always with us. The worst thing is that in a nation of laws, where judges and justice should be impartial, Sotomayor has fetishized her own identity into a rationale for certain (predictable, liberal) political preferences.
Maybe there will be a coke can with a pubic hair or something. That was fun.

What gives? Why, soft aluminum castings, of course.

Here's a shade tree project that's kept me occupied for couple three hours (!). My favorite riding mower blew it's transaxle...check this out. An internal screw backed out of a gear, snapped off and got caught between the gear and the aluminum housing. You can see the screw embedded in the lower housing here (an internal view)...

A view of the housing, from the outside, showing the screw head clearly visible...

Macro shot of the screw, internally embedded in the housing. Note that the gear had begun to eat away at the screw. The gear is hardened steel, much harder than the screw, but it still shows signs of a struggle.

Here's a closeup of the screw head just about driven through the housing. Note the stress fractures...I'm lucky the housing didn't erupt into twenty pieces.

I removed the screw, and sealed the housing. Goes back together tomorrow, probably, just in time to mow again.

Interesting that Twitter and Facebook are considered in the category 'Web 1.0', while MySpace resides in 'Welcome to the Social'.

Maybe they will eventually wind up in 'Epic Fail'. We can only hope.

Nancy Pelosi, starring with Pussy Galore

"Lack of Leadership. Democrats Galore."

Darleen Click brings us this holiday hilarity...
The RNC uses images and audio from 1964’s Goldfinger, where not only Bond but the CIA gets to play, to tweak Liar Pelosi and Hapless Gibbs. For a brief 3 seconds (at .40) SanFranGran is shown side-by-side with Bond villainess, Pussy Galore, and all kerfuffle breaks loose.

The best RNC video of the year. I'm a Bond fan, so double the fun and enjoyment.

Nancy, shown here with Pussy Galore.

PW commentator Salt Lick opines "Pelosi’s “feminine wiles” aren’t worthy of touching Honor Blackman’s bra straps."

Double the fun! The RNC could easily do this again with Harry Reid.

Obama endorses indefinite detention without trial for some

WASHINGTON - President Obama acknowledged publicly for the first time Thursday that some detainees at Guantanamo Bay may have to be held without trial indefinitely, siding with conservative national security advocates on one of the most contentious issues raised by the closing of the military prison in Cuba.

"We are going to exhaust every avenue that we have to prosecute those at Guantanamo who pose a danger to our country," Obama said. "But even when this process is complete, there may be a number of people who cannot be prosecuted for past crimes, but who nonetheless pose a threat to the security of the United States."

Bill Clinton gropes Fran Drescher (right in front of a camera in Vienna) (but it's all good; they are both New Yorkers)

Bill Clinton caught groping ‘Nanny’ star
20 May 2009, 0109 hrs IST, AGENCIES

Former US president Bill Clinton met Fran Drescher at the Life Ball charity event in Vienna over the past weekend. And he was caught on camera groping the actress. It seems that he likes to keep his fingers on the pulse of the important issues.

Former president Bill Clinton met Fran Drescher at the Life Ball charity event in Vienna over the past weekend. What happened was an embarrassing brush between the two. The jury is still out on whether giving a hand in this way can happen accidentally.
There you go. Not quite his type, though; Fran ("Are you as good in bed as you are on the dance floor?") Drescher is 52. A long way from Saturday Night Fever, and 1977.. And much more cognizant than dear little Monica.

Don't get me wrong...I'd be tempted to play the field too, if I was married to Hillary.

From the era of Jimmah Carter, surprisingly enough.

President Bush's 'evilness' is now Barack Obama's 'evilness'. Democrats watch their candidate morph (AKA GROWING UP)

With the final Senate Democrat vote counted, Barack Hussein Obama has lost another foreign policy initiative and has failed to deliver on yet another campaign promise -- this time, the promise to close the U.S. 'Torture' Base in Guantánamo. From Victor Davis Hanson at NRO...
...I think we now have come to the end to the five-year left-wing attack theme of Bush "shredding the Constitution."

Except for the introduction of euphemisms and a few new ballyhooed but largely meaningless protocols, there is no longer a Bush-did-it argument. The Patriot Act, wiretaps, e-mail intercepts, military tribunals, Predator drone attacks, Iraq, Afghanistan — and now Guantánamo — are officially no longer part of the demonic Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld nexus...
[emphases mine.]

Obama promised cadres of simple-minded Leftists -- those KOS-Kid diarists, the Atriosidiots, the upper-crusty leftys at Sadly, nOObs, Madam Huffingblows -- all are shaking their heads and wondering, what went wrong? We fought for and elected this pretty blow-up doll pezzydent, this vacuous agent of CHANGE, who was supposed to bring on an age of enlightenment; all the world's nations were supposed to adore us; all the tortures and wiretaps and..and...BRING THE TROOPS HOME NOW, BITCH~! whaa happened ?

Let's ask Karl Rove what happened...

Flip-Flops and Governance Our president isn't quite as advertised. By KARL ROVE

Barack Obama inherited a set of national-security policies that he rejected during the campaign but now embraces as president. This is a stunning and welcome about-face.

For example, President Obama kept George W. Bush's military tribunals for terror detainees after calling them an "enormous failure" and a "legal black hole." His campaign claimed last summer that "court systems . . . are capable of convicting terrorists." Upon entering office, he found out they aren't.

He insisted in an interview with NBC in 2007 that Congress mandate "consequences" for "a failure to meet various benchmarks and milestones" on aid to Iraq. Earlier this month he fought off legislatively mandated benchmarks in the $97 billion funding bill for Iraq and Afghanistan.

Mr. Obama agreed on April 23 to American Civil Liberties Union demands to release investigative photos of detainee abuse. Now's he reversed himself. Pentagon officials apparently convinced him that releasing the photos would increase the risk to U.S. troops and civilian personnel.

Throughout his presidential campaign, Mr. Obama excoriated Mr. Bush's counterinsurgency strategy in Iraq, insisting it could not succeed. Earlier this year, facing increasing violence in Afghanistan, Mr. Obama rejected warnings of a "quagmire" and ordered more troops to that country. He isn't calling it a "surge" but that's what it is. He is applying in Afghanistan the counterinsurgency strategy Mr. Bush used in Iraq.

As a candidate, Mr. Obama promised to end the Iraq war by withdrawing all troops by March 2009. As president, he set a slower pace of drawdown. He has also said he will leave as many as 50,000 Americans troops there.

These reversals are both praiseworthy and evidence that, when it comes to national security, being briefed on terror threats as president is a lot different than placating MoveOn.org and Code Pink activists as a candidate. The realities of governing trump the realities of campaigning.
There's more; Karl Rove 'splains why BHO has failed to deliver on the home front as well. But, on the home front, we see the potential of great harm to the Nation if BHO's barely-concealed 'reparations' social programs hit the economy...
Mr. Obama campaigned on "responsible fiscal policies," arguing in a speech on the Senate floor in 2006 that the "rising debt is a hidden domestic enemy." In his acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention, he pledged to "go through the federal budget line by line, eliminating programs that no longer work." Even now, he says he'll "cut the deficit . . . by half by the end of his first term in office" and is "rooting out waste and abuse" in the budget.

However, Mr. Obama's fiscally conservative words are betrayed by his liberal actions. He offers an orgy of spending and a bacchanal of debt. His budget plans a 25% increase in the federal government's share of the GDP, a doubling of the national debt in five years, and a near tripling of it in 10 years.

On health care, Mr. Obama's election ads decried "government-run health care" as "extreme," saying it would lead to "higher costs." Now he is promoting a plan that would result in a de facto government-run health-care system. Even the Washington Post questions it, saying, "It is difficult to imagine . . . benefits from a government-run system."

Making adjustments in office is one thing. Constantly governing in direct opposition to what you said as a candidate is something else. Mr. Obama's flip-flops on national security have been wise; on the domestic front, they have been harmful.
Harmful, indeed. We'll be lucky to survive the damage BHO intends to inflict on our economy.

But really, we knew what he was about. We knew that sitting in that RACIST! Black Liberation Theology Church, listening to Reverend Wright and Father Phleger spew their hatreds for all those years, after having attended Columbia University and slept through the Harvard Law school, then immersing himself in the teachings of Known Terrorist Bill Ayers and playing politics in the nation's worst political hell-hole, that we were getting a man who was a creature of his past. A past that molded him for one thing and one thing only: to assault the Constitution of the United States, and CHANGE! things to a more leftist, socialist, 'feel-good' sort of Nation.

We asked for it, so's here it is.

As far as President Bush, VDH, take it from here...
... what was the hysteria of 2001-2008 about other than simple politics?

I doubt we get any more movies about ongoing renditions, redactions, any more Checkpoint-like novels, any more waterboarding skits and reenactments, any more late-night comedians doing their Bush tapped, intercepted, tortured, renditioned, tribunaled poor suspect X routines.

And I guess as well that the good old days of supposedly flushed Korans in Guantánamo and Omar the poor liberationist renditioned to Cairo are over. We are now in the age of a sober and judicious President Obama who circumspectly, if reluctantly and in anguish at the high cost, does what is necessary to keep us safe.

And we won't see a brave young liberal senator, Obama-like, barnstorming the Iowa precincts blasting a presidency for trampling our values with the shame of Guantánamo, wiretaps, intercepts, renditions, military tribunals, Predators, Iraq, etc. That motif just dissolved — or rather, it never really existed.

It short, all the fury, the vicious slander, the self-righteous outbursts, the impassioned speeches from the floor, the "I accuse" op-eds by the usual moralistic pundits — all that turned out to be solely about politics, nothing more.
Nothing more, Democrats.

You've chosen poorly. Actually, you chose a man who has had, at least on foreign policy issues, to grow up.

And, from his moment forward, you won't have President Bush to bash, anymore.

How's that feel, hmmmm?

Glenn Beck on The View

Why, I ask, did Glenn give these five leftist blatherers free shots? None of 'em I would watch, unless someone held a gun to my head. Make-no-Whoopie (no Cushion there!) Goldberg just makes me want to evacuate my stomach, and not in a good way. Baba WaWa? didn't she used to be much better than this, with a higher-class platform, not needing the surrounding chuckleheads? Who's this has-been hag I see before me now? WTF, Glenn?

Glenn must have some sort of self-torture gene what's recently activated. To go on this show, The View, and suffer these cackling magpies (and I mean that in the nicest way possible), has to be considered in league with San Fran Nan's self-torturing press conferences. But Nancy had those coming, given her years of hating George Bush and her near-daily throwing of BDS chum bits to the Leftists; Glenn didn't need to give these frigate birds the time of day. But he did.

You've a strong stomach, Glenn. I'd say you deserve a drink, but that would be ill-considerate of me. Tell you what; I'll have one for you. )

Sarah Palin and the Republican Party are cleared by the FEC for supposed rule 'violations'

One of the nasstiest tricks the Left pulled last fall was to attack Sarah Palin's wardrobe, those purchases the Republican Party made on her behalf. Well, that's all out the window; the FEC dismissed those complaints...

WASHINGTON - The Federal Election Commission has dismissed a complaint over the $150,000-plus designer wardrobe the Republican Party bought to outfit vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, the good-government group that filed the complaint, argued that candidates aren't supposed to use donor money for personal expenses such as clothes. The FEC ruled Tuesday that the ban doesn't apply to party money, however.

Hardly a word, now, about those $540.00 shoes and that collection of tablecloths and curtains our First Klingon is wearing...

Sarah Palin is a hate-magnet for the far-Left. They've few targets to latch onto, since George Bush has faded from the spotlight. Perennial targets of hate, and targets of opportunity (including Rush Limbaugh, Karl Rove, Dick Cheney, Joe the Plumber, and now Carrie Prejean of all people) catch their sputtering winds of spite, but lovely steely-eyed Sarah Palin brings out special fear and loathing. That's all it is, really; fear that Sarah Palin might expose their soft, weak underbellies, and loathing that Sarah Palin eclipses their far-left socialist offerings with her determination and popular anti-Washington flavor. Pro-life, pro-2nd Amendment, and, like Ted Nugent, tough as nails.

Sarah Palin was (and is) a breath of fresh air to the dismal pollution that is Washington D.C. politics. Of course the lefties are threatened by Sarah; she's unbent by their tirades and their invented crusades against her.

One thing for sure: John McCain was a sorry-ass candidate, and probably doomed to failure from the start, but he received millions and millions more votes than he would have because of Sarah Palin. Mine for one. Not that I would've voted for that dirty socialist rat Obonga, but I might've stayed home, or voted third party. Which would've been, as we all know, a wasted vote.

Squirm, Pelosi, Squirm! and while you're at it, how about a nice Squeal?

Nancy Pelosi squirms while lying.

Let's get this lying biatch under oath soonest.

Clyde has a plan to...Save Nancy...

One of the worst things to hear on a farm comes with a plaintive stare, "the pig's stuck again." Donning work boots or even a clean suit wouldn't help. Getting a pig unstuck from the mud was neither clean or fun. And the most aggravating part was that it always seemed to be the same pig.

Well, that's what we have now. Nancy done got stuck, and we gotta get her out. I'll tell you why in a minute. Her polls are tanking - down to 39% approval and 48% disapproval. Mike Huckabee is writing poems about her. Jack Kelly is piling on. David Keene is telling her to fess up. it's getting ugly out there. The dems are just trying to change the subject - anything but nasal showers for unkempt terrorists!

What's a poor girl to do? Be brave, Nancy. We'll save you.

Listen closely, dear. Here's what you need to do.

First, shut up.

Ted Nugent, and the simpering Leftists he antagonizes

It's a split-second world: in predator-prey interactions, natural selection favors fast-thinking Conservative sorts. Now, in our new, soft, pansified world, lefty-liberals (those of weaker minds and simpering responses) have the luxury of time to 'couch' their reactions. If anything happens to this thin veneer of civilization (think worst-case scenarios, a meltdown after Barack Obama's neo-Socialism destroys our economy), Conservatives will be survivors.

Because we are more suited to respond quickly to predator-prey moments.

Case in point: Ted Nugent, rocker extraordinaire, NRA Board member, Conservative icon, answers questions posed by a sissified 'journalist' (h/t Jeff Goldstein)...

UP: Well, look at Rush Limbaugh. Rush Limbaugh is a substance abusing criminal.

TN: Really?

UP: He was. He was hooked on oxycodone.

TN: You're one of those guys that's going to try to equate rush Limbaugh with meth heads?

UP: No, but he was illegally using drugs.

TN: He had a prescription drug problem for a period of time. But, in the final analysis, is Rush in the asset column or the liability column. Did he learn from his mistakes or didn't he?

UP: I don't know. I don't know him.

TN: You call yourself as journalist and you don't know that?

UP: I don't know him personally, I don't know where he is personally.

TN: I think it's universally known that Rush beat that demon. And he's been on the law-abiding side for many more years than he was on the law-breaking side... but to compare Rush's blink of and eye stumble to the drug culture. Martin, I gotta tell you, when I see you I'm going to have slap the shit out of you. I'll buy you a mocha, then I'll knee-cap you. Because that is so soulless. What a far-reaching fantasy.

UP: I just don't know that drugs are a liberal or conservative problem, is all I'm saying.

TN: Bottom line? Do conservatives and liberals all make mistakes? You think? Do conservatives at least not just preach, but do their damndest to implement and certainly live by a realm of accountability? You're damned right they do. Do liberals? No...

Goes without saying that Ted Nugent would be a survivor, if and when something untoward happens to our left-shifting society.

I'd much rather be in his company than that of any Leftist, if such an untowardness did happen.

Notre Dame Protesters Interrupt Barack Obama: 39 Thrown in Jail

This is what we needed to see. A full-throated protest of Obama's years of supporting abortion. Shame on Notre Dame for their invitation. "Nearly 40 people were arrested Sunday", "hundreds attended an outdoor Mass and rally", "at least three ejected from the commencement" after interrupting Dear Leader.

Norma McCorvey, "Roe" of Roe vs. Wade, was among the protesters arrested Sunday. It seems "Roe" had a change of heart; decided abortion wasn't the best way to dispose of a nascent human after all. At 61, life is a little more precious than it is at 21. McCorvey is a devout Catholic.

Liberalism vs. Leftism

I've always said that Leftism has captured and stolen the soul of the Democrat Party.

This essay, written by a Liberal (NOT a Leftist) educator explains exactly what is the difference between a liberal and a Leftist.
We liberals should sharply distinguish “liberal” from “Leftist.” The latter characterized by anger, hatred, bullying, intransigence, and intellectual dishonesty. These spiritual diseases, legacies of the French Revolution and its Terror, began to infect liberalism in the early 20th century. This ugly spirit has contaminated much of academic life outside the hard sciences, economics, and business schools. As a consequence, many of the ideas and attitudes in the humanities and social sciences are profoundly, tragically misguided.
A checklist of Liberalism. Note that there's no embrace of Marxist ideas; rather, liberals appreciate the fact that our capitalistic economic system is a giver to anyone willing to work.

A checklist to determine whether or not Liberalism has returned to our campuses:

  1. Are most students and professors aware that under 19th century free market capitalism in the United States and Britain that it was not true that “the rich got richer and the poor got poorer?” i.e., that the working class standard of living steadily increased under laissez-faire capitalism?
  2. Do most students and professors understand that wealth is created almost exclusively by private enterprise (given a framework based on the rule of law)?
  3. Are most students and professors aware that Marxist governments murdered over 100 million people in the 20th century, vastly exceeding the loss of human life due to the Nazis?
  4. Do most students and professors acknowledge that those humanely-motivated academics who self-identified as Marxists should, indeed, accept responsibility for having advocated a repeatedly murderous ideology? (“We didn't intend those outcomes” is not an adequate excuse after the fourth totalitarian Marxist regime, predictably enough, committed mass murder.)
  5. Do most students and professors understand public choice theory?
  6. Do most students and professors understand the necessary relationship between economic freedom, on the one hand, and creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship, on the other?
So, read the thing, and weep for what's happened to the Democrats, to the liberals. There's no turning back, now; because Barack Obama is a Leftist.

"Live Free or Die": Mark Steyn's Hillsdale College lecture

This lecture, delivered March 9th at Hillsdale College and adapted to print and web access last month, stands as one of the best reads I've seen on the subject of encroaching Big Government, ever.

Mark Steyn posits five increasingly insuffocating stages of Big Government: Stage One, the massive expansion of a government (Mark places the U.S., with our recent economic 'stimuli' injections, as well into the 'Stage One' phase.) During Stage Two, we see the inevitable government control phase that follows the stimuli. We see Stage Two activities now, and hardly masked. Ask the ex-CEO of GM, and the almost ex-CEO of Bank of America what they think. We are what we eat; since we, America's people and many corporations, have dieted on Government 'Stimulus' (yes, the government 'cheese' programs count), we also have to accept the inevitable coalescence of government controls that are now flowing in our arteries. It's just a matter of time before we have to accept whatever we're told to accept.

Stage Three is the 'what you can think' phase. Since Government is providing so much for you, shouldn't you pay attention to what we (an overlord sort of committee comprised of the great, the Left's, best 'thinkers'; no doubt to include the best free-thinkers the Harvard's and Columbia University's can ooze), feel is right for you to think? Stage Four, the ominous 'now, here's what you can't think, or say, because if we hear you in public conversation saying those racist, sexist, homophobic things, you'll be sent to jail.' Once-Great Britain is now firmly a Stage Four participant, as Mark Steyn illustrates.

Stage Five, the final stage, is the current European model. The State gives one everything one could possible want or need; every group is considered equal; work is an afterthought. I posted just last week this video that's explaining how and why cultures die. Mark Steyn sums up the European State quite nicely...
The key word here is "give." When the state "gives" you plenty—when it takes care of your health, takes cares of your kids, takes care of your elderly parents, takes care of every primary responsibility of adulthood—it's not surprising that the citizenry cease to function as adults: Life becomes a kind of extended adolescence—literally so for those Germans who've mastered the knack of staying in education till they're 34 and taking early retirement at 42. Hilaire Belloc, incidentally, foresaw this very clearly in his book The Servile State in 1912. He understood that the long-term cost of a welfare society is the infantilization of the population.
But a controlling nanny state is exactly what our infantile Left wants, exatly what they voted for... a sea (at sea?) CHANGE. This CHANGE will destroy the very essence of America, our heritage and culture, if it progresses as has the European model. Since we've accepted Stage One, is there any way to get off this mindless ship what's heading for an iceberg?

Where are we, America, heading? Are we just going to accept what the Europeans accepted, become a Eurosocialist state? Or will something give along the way? When will enough be enough?

Ric Locke points out (in comments on Jeff's post, h/t BTW) that we (Stage One, America) might see the fall of the European socialist model, before we too go over the cliff...

What’s going to be really interesting, provided anyone’s still around to notice, is what will happen in Europe and Japan.

The U.S. economy has been carrying the Europeans for at least the last half-century — not just in the obvious ways, like we spend for defense so they don’t have to, but in trade imbalances (some of them not easily accounted for, like us requiring the drug and aerospace companies to finance research out of their own pockets) and providing a credible reserve currency. I had a Frenchman rejoice over the election of Sarkozy, on the ground that now the French could get back to what they do best: fucking Americans.

Note to the French, and other Europeans: that’s over. No socialist regime has ever succeeded without an outside subsidy; the fact that the subsidy to Europe isn’t readily visible doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist, and it does. So when “the Americans will pay, as usual” (quote from Tom Clancy) goes away, what price European “safety net”?

Regards,
Ric

Americans, how close are we to the choice: "Live free or Die" ... ?

Barack Obama invokes National Security Exemption to FOIA lawsuit

...the same FOIA request that George Bush challenged only on law enforcement and privacy grounds.

The end result? Barack Obama has flip-flopped again. Seems that all of these rhetorical flash in the pan campaign promises are now exposed as simplistic, wishful naivete; pandering to the childish rampages of his far-left electorate. You recall those spittle-flecked nutty kids who demanded the the troops be brought home, NOW! Sorry, punks, Barack Obama hasn't brought them home, and won't, anytime soon; instead, he's following many of George Bush's policies. Those same policies he decried to applause from...Lefty kids. Kids who've demanded release of all of the detainee 'abuse' photos, NOW! Barack Obama shuts 'em down, using a tactic that, had George Bush utilized it, those hyperventilating kids would've again bounced, flounced and shat their diapers. From the ACLU, some typical crying and babbling...
“This essentially renders meaningless President Obama's pledge of transparency and accountability that he made in the early days after taking office,” said Singh, the ACLU lawyer. The Obama administration “has essentially become complicit with the torture that was rampant during the Bush years by being complicit in its cover-up.”
Lovin' it. Keep crying...from another Lefty group...
Civil liberties and human rights advocates asserted the reversal would serve to maintain the Bush administration's legacy of secrecy. Kenneth Roth, executive director of Human Rights Watch, said Obama's shift was “deeply disappointing.”

“Even given that the photos will undoubtedly generate outrage in the region, the best way to dampen that outrage is to hold those responsible accountable,” Roth said.
Seems that becoming President forces one to grow up, even this underemployed Unicorn-riding 'lightbringer'. Now, you lefty kids, take and listen carefully to a message from yo' Daddy:
"The publication of these photos would not add any additional benefit to our understanding of what was carried out in the past by a small number of individuals," Obama said.

"In fact, the most direct consequence of releasing them would be to further inflame anti-American opinion, and to put our troops in greater danger."
The greatest flip-flopper of our times. Because he has to be.

"Shut Up": the Left's Lifelong Response to Conservative's Ideas and Criticisms.

I won't Shut Up.

Miss California plays the Baracky Card; oh, and this: TENNESSEE INADVERTENTLY MARRIES SAME-SEX COUPLE! Update: MARRIAGE VOIDED

Stifle it, bitches. Your President feels the same way about same-sex marriage as Carrie Prejean; you can't change that, and your wining snit-fits and temper tantrums aren't getting the job done. Hate it for you.

Donald Trump on Miss California: Same as Barack Obama

President Barack Obama ended up in the middle of an unlikely controversy this morning — the debate over Miss California’s position on gay marriage.

At a press conference addressing Carrie Prejean’s disputed title in the Miss USA competition, pageant owner Donald Trump compared Prejean’s stated views on gay marriage to Obama’s.

“It's the same answer that the president of the United States gave,” Trump said. “She gave an honorable answer. She gave an answer from her heart.”

In her own remarks moments later, Prejean echoed Trump’s statement, telling reporters: “The president of the United States, the secretary of state, and many Americans agree with me in this belief.”
Now, this next is just...weird. From yesterday's Leaf-Chronicle (I saw the Clarksville paper; this was the lead story on page A-1...

State marries same-sex couple

ID says woman but in jail as man; state says gender cannot change

Phillips and Rittenberry are the first same-sex marriage in Tennessee.

Rittenberry, 46, and Phillips, 33, met through a hot-line service and legally wed in November 2007
Oh, and the hilarity does ensue. You'll have to visit that article, look at the grinning bride's photo. It seems that she was a he, she had some kind of surgery, but the surgery obviously didn't get...everything.
Rittenberry was born a man but identifies as a woman and claims to have had sex reassignment surgery. Although Rittenberry's Tennessee driver's license and Kentucky birth certificate say "female," both the Montgomery County Jail and the clinic where Rittenberry claims to have had surgery insist that Rittenberry is still biologically a man.
You'd think at some point during the honeymoon that the groom might notice something's not exactly, you know, right, but he's not exactly sure of what's supposed to go where. What a pain in the ass that must be...
"The marriage is real to me," Rittenberry said in a jail interview. "I could care less about the system. I just wanted me and Jeff to be together. He wanted to marry me and I said 'yes.'"
Well, that's fine I suppose, but I still wonder what's up with the extra pieces. I think a lawsuit is in order..."Doc, you tole me that junk was fixed!"
The same-sex marriage of Rittenberry, also known as Terri Jo Colby, and Phillips took officials by surprise and demonstrates that in Tennessee, gender identification is often a matter of trust.
Well, and eyesight. At some point the Kroger sacks have to come off.

And the poor officials at the County Clerk's office?
"In all honesty, women look like men and men look like women ... so whatever the ID says, we take it as what they are."
Yeah. Glad I don't hang around that County Clerk's office, I'd never keep a meal down.
Farmer said he has never heard of a case like this and expects an investigation to take place.
I'd like to be a fly on the wall when that goes down.
Rittenberry claims to have had a male-to-female genital reassignment surgery in 2003 at the clinic of Dr. Pierre Brassard and Yvon Menard in Montreal, Canada.

Brigitte Morin, medical secretary at the clinic, said in a phone interview that Rittenberry was on file as a patient at the clinic under the name Terry Jo Colby. But, she said, no sex reassignment operation was performed and no documentation was given to Rittenberry verifying such a surgery.
"Turn around three times and click you heels, dear. Now, off you go!"

What about the, you know, "Jail" experience?
Rittenberry was booked in the jail on March 19, charged with domestic assault against a relative and criminal impersonation stemming from allegations of credit card fraud in 2004.
Criminal impersonation. Well, s/he's got that figured out.
Medical personnel at the jail conducted a physical and identified Rittenberry as a man.
"What's that hanging thingy for, again?"
"He still has male genitalia, and as far as the state of Tennessee is concerned and the jail is concerned, he's still a man," Denny said. "He will be treated like a man — with respect — but he has to be treated like a man because all documentation points to his male gender from birth."
That's edgy. And cruel. Can't you just take someone at their word, anymore?
Rittenberry is in isolation for protection.
NO! Tell me it ain't so!
"In a facility like ours or any prison facility, when you have someone to fall in that category, he could be taken advantage of," Denny said. "He is in isolation to keep from being injured or someone hurting him."
Ya think?
Saturday evening, following inmate visitation, Phillips, Rittenberry's husband, sat on the steps of the jail smoking a Marlboro.

He calmly said that from his understanding, Rittenberry did have sex reassignment.

"To me, she's a woman," Phillips said.

He said when he married Rittenberry, he knew Rittenberry was transgender.

When asked if Rittenberry had male or female genitalia, Phillips paused and repeated, "To me, she's a woman."
Still a pain in the ass, I'll warrant.
UPDATE: Tennessee Voids Marriage of Transgender Couple.

Oh. This.

His (whatever) "Cheerleader" photo.

Now I'm really ill.

Politics is like pro wrestling? Are these guys for real?

The Obama Deception: a full-length video (should be in HD.)

Or, see here.

Salient points, if you have enough grains of salt.

Star Trek, another timeline, closer to home. Scarily closer to home.

A Tale of Two Jokes: one is a rib-splitter; the other, well, Obama Himself laughed!

A weekend of laughter, no doubt. Two jokes, two different sides of the political aisle.

Guess which joker felt the need to apologize? That's not even a good rhetorical question. Everyone knows that answer.

First, from the Left, a sensationally funny joke:

Unfunny Comedian Compares Limbaugh to bin Laden; Obama Laughs (Update: Obama to Sykes: Great Job)

"You've had your fair share of critics. ... Rush Limbaugh said this administration fails. ... He just wants the country to fail. To me that's treason. He's not saying anything different than what Osama Bin Laden is saying. You might want to look into this, sir, because I think Rush Limbaugh was the 20th hijacker but he was just so strung out on Oxycontin he missed his flight. ... Rush Limbaugh, I hope the country fails, I hope his kidneys fail, how about that? He needs a good waterboarding, that's what he needs."
I hope you die. Funny, dat. Read Brian's excellent write-up, complete with videos, for more.

I think today would be a good day to listen to Rush.

The other joke you might not have heard. David Feherty laid this old 'three people, two bullets' joke on Nancy Pelosi...

CBS Sports golf analyst David Feherty apologized Sunday to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid for a morbid joke that went bad in a Dallas magazine.

"From my own experience visiting the troops in the Middle East, I can tell you this though," Feherty wrote toward the end of his column.

"Despite how the conflict has been portrayed by our glorious media, if you gave any U.S. soldier a gun with two bullets in it, and he found himself in an elevator with Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and Osama bin Laden, there's a good chance that Nancy Pelosi would get shot twice, and Harry Reid and bin Laden would be strangled to death."

BWAHAHAHAHAHA~!

Hmmm. Sorry. Obviously over the top. My laughter is inappropriate.  )

Not a lot of difference in these jokes. Both were over the top. But the tale plays out like an overused script.

One joker had the gumption to apologize...
"This passage was a metaphor meant to describe how American troops felt about our 43rd president," Feherty said in a statement. "In retrospect, it was inappropriate and unacceptable, and has clearly insulted Speaker Pelosi and Senator Reid, and for that, I apologize. As for our troops, they know I will continue to do as much as I can for them both at home and abroad."
One joker had the President of the United States grinning from ear to ear. But don't expect any apologies from that lefty cooze.

One joker will probably lose his job, or at least find less work coming his way. There's not a great market at CBS for golf analysts; at least he wasn't employed by NBC, he would've been fired already. Doesn't Olbermann run that network now?

One joker will be celebrated and toasted, and reap economic benefits from her remarks (and will probably get a night in the Lincoln Bedroom, what you wanna bet? But watch out for Those Arms, Wanda, don't get any ideas, you'll get a hug that might crush your kidneys...)

One joker (who has gone to Iraq over Thanksgiving the past two years to visit with U.S. troops, and created a foundation to help wounded soldiers) will be truly sorry, and regret his intemperance.

But I'll leave it to you to guess which joker I would rather spend time with. Or which joker would fit in better as, say, an embedded correspondent in Afghanistan or Iraq.

See you on the course, David.

The 'Galt Effect': it's here, because this time, we knew.

Insty points to this post at Maenianum Secundum, "Hemorrhaging Federal Receipts", where Herself writes...
In September 2008, many people saw the writing on the wall, and began preparing for a Democratic-controlled Congress and a Democrat in the Oval Office.  Unlike the Carter dormancy period (the months leading up to his win and the months before he took the Oath of Office), business had no experience with which to forecast how a Democratic Congress and President would behave.  This time, we knew.

...

Going Galt is one way that individuals and business owners can signal their disapproval of the Federal government’s handling of the economy, and their ideas for programs/spending.  For many, however, Going Galt has not been an ideological choice, but a choice imposed on them.  Anecdotally, we can read the horror stories from people who are unemployed, or business owners who have seen their business receipts drop off the cliff, forcing them into a Galt-state.  But these are only anecdotes and don’t present an accurate picture of just how Galt the economy has become.

What we can do is look at Federal receipts.
Herself posts a few nice charts, one of which I will, ahem, enhance. This chart shows what's happening with federal receipts (our taxes paid to the feds) since Obama took office. The 'Galt Effect'.

Just lovely, no?

This next chart I saved on my desktop last month, from somewhere, but it fits in very nicely with this post...

Yes, that's what we're looking at. Note that these are just projected deficits; if the Galt Effect steepens, then less Federal money means more deficit.

Raise taxes, you proggressives would say? Why, that might make things worse. Remember, when Reagan lowered taxes, federal receipts went up. But with this lefty liberal proggtard in office, we are pushing 'catch-up', kid in a candy store social programs with the end result being the punishing of businesses. New taxes won't help.

The solution is (sorry, libs) to cut, cut, cut federal spending, including those out-of-control social programs. We may as well forget about Universal Health Care at this time. While we're wishing upon a star, we might as well wish for term limits on all of those serving in public offices; restoring State's rights to constitutional levels; and getting rid of tenure in our schools and universities. And, the lawyers; a few less of those wouldn't hurt either. )

White House releases crappy Air Force One flyover image...

...seen here at the official White house site (h/t Molon Labe in comments). Well, of course it's bad; New Jersey is visible, and we're ready to cough just looking at the air pollution evident in that photo.

Here's my post-production effort.

I'll send you a bill, Baracky.

Obama and Biden: Not Photoshopped UPDATED: Now it is...

Obama and Biden under a baleful poster (and a wicked shadow of a boom mike). Clicky to embiggen.

...from a lefty photojournalism site that took 'em down (too edgy for their tastes). Can't possibly have Teh O!ne show up framed in the harsh light of bad taste, now can we?

But my g00gle Reader, it's forever.
UPDATE: Couldn't resist...

When Rae's in the mood, there's no stopping her. Right, boys? )

INCOMPETENT HARVARD GRAD OUT OF THE WHITE HOUSE!

No, not that one.

This one.

We'll have to wait a bit longer for the right one to leave, I'm afraid.

Star Trek: the latest movie: what, no Progressive Ethical Dilemmas? What about t*ts? UPDATE: a pretty good movie.

There's crying in the streets that Star Trek (the latest movie's title; there's no numbering systems) plays down the 'trademark' progressive ethos for more exciting and robust (and, money-making?) action scenes.

Huh? Do you mean to tell me that the reason all of those trekkies flocked to this series for decades, decrying real lives (NTTAWWT) was to witness cultural changeyness? That's worked out well.

Dan's post yesterday drew the usual excellence in commentary, including this gem...
Comment by BJT-FREE! on 5/7 @ 7:21 am #

This sentiment from the googliest Obama lovers of the national news magazine set should come as no surprise and is completely in line with Hollywood sentiments.

Tinsel Town may just be getting the “message” that “message” movies of a progressive bent don’t … whats that word … oh, yea SELL! Forgetting all of the anti Iraq war movies which collectively made about $1.78 while losing gazillions despite slavishly favorable reviews, instead consider the gold standard for such tripe : The Good Shepherd

Mind numbing, boring, deep dark preachy, unwatchable, unsuccessful, despite a top notch cast.

The films that do preach and achieve some modicum of success (think “Wall-E”) do so because they also … oh, what’s that word … oh yea ENTERTAIN! Or, maybe, they present a point of view without sledge hammering it into our cerebral cortex (think “Atonement.”)JJ Abrams hasn’t made his pile by plying a particular political point of view. He’s filthy rich because he can make a movie true to the construct of the story and wow audiences with great action and reasonable character development.

But the narrative is all powerful and far reaching and damn that Abrams for taking out all of the Utopian mind sets of idealist Gene Roddenberry’s original series. How will that small cadre of Trekkies who have held fast to that ideal of the original Star Trek as the blueprint for a better world going to survive this wallowing in the morass of Teh Fun?!

I’d suggest getting a date.
Hmmmph. My main question: does this film include an actress approaching the quality of otherwise-dull Star Trek: Voyager's Seven of Nine? Hmmmm?

I'll just have to go see, I suppose.
UPDATE
No spoilers. Just a couple noncommital-couple things...

What surprised me the most, and I felt was the biggest stretch, was Uhura’s newfound --uality.

I'm getting tired of seeing nice cars trashed.

You can tell that the competitive Star Wars has greatly influenced these new Trek writers. I wonder if there could be a criss-cross sort of movie, something like Alien vs. Predator? Now that would be a hoot. The Federation vs. the Sith Lords, or the Force vs. the Borg. Captain Kirk meets Darth Rove or something. (Kirk, in the Mos Eisley Cantina…what would you expect him to pick up in there? )

Oh! “Beam me up, Scotty.” One of the 'phrases that Trekkies expected', but didn't get.

Last: The timeline is trashed. It's a brave, new, boldly-go-there again! sort of Trek world, now.

Over all rating:
UPDATE II

Smitty's added this as a R.S. McCain Rule 5 Sunday Linky. Thanks, Smitty~!

Patriot Act abused...

...under the Obama administration.

We knew he would abuse it; it was only a matter of when.

(Oh, you say he had nothing to do with it, eh? Then did he have anything at all to do with those pirate's heads asploding last month or not? His watch; his responsibility.)

Arlen Specter finds his 29 years of senority flushed down the crapper.

What a tool. Arlen Specter has about as much credibility left as Al Franken or Jeanane Garofalo. Sorry, Arlen, you just crapped in your Depends, and there's no one who wants to get close enough to help you out. Sit in your own stench and rot.

Meltdown: Specter stands alone

The blowback came Tuesday night: On a voice vote, the Senate voted to strip Specter of his 29 years of seniority, effectively transforming him in a blink-and-you-missed-it-moment from one of the most senior senators in the body to a lowly freshman on most committees.
Oh, don't forget to come back and pick up your two "lobsterpot bimbos". Maybe they'll caucus with you.

Azzhole.

More at The Swamp.

"Goverprise", the Starship captained by an Identity Politician

Dan had much fun yesterday with this commissioned pshop...

I worked late, missed out on the fun.

Someone has to keep the economy sputtering along I suppose.

" Scotty, I need full left rudder NOW!"

"Sorry, Captain Obama, but we don't have enough dilithium cash crystals left to power your proposals. You've spent it all on bailouts and stimulus!"

" Then we'll go forward in time and take it from our grandkids! I've got to keep my ACORN base happy and organizing!"

On second thought...

I'll have fun with this. Thanks, Dan~!

"Absolute Power" begins to corrupt. Chrysler dances; fascism ensues.

"Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men."
The sources, who represent creditors to Chrysler, say they were taken aback by the hardball tactics that the Obama administration employed to cajole them into acquiescing to plans to restructure Chrysler. One person described the administration as the most shocking “end justifies the means” group they have ever encountered. Another characterized Obama was “the most dangerous smooth talker on the planet- and I knew Kissinger.” Both were voters for Obama in the last election.
Here you go. Obama is working to create the more perfect union of State and Corporate power, in this case by using the tools of fear and the threats of fear and retaliation. Remember Obama's earlier threat to CEO's, “My administration is the only thing between you and the pitchforks.”

I think the pitchforks would be more American than this example of brownshirt fascism. Not that they are yet completely out of consideration...
h/t Jeff Goldstein. Also linked as a PW update, this from finem respice (a financial blogger) who details a confrontation between one of Chrysler's secured lenders and Obama "Car Czar" Steven Rattner...
By way of reminder, on May 2, 2009 I published this:

This (as yet unproven) yarn goes exactly like this:

Confronting the head of a non-TARP fund holding Chrysler debt and unwilling to release it for any sum less than that to which it was legally entitled without compelling cause, this country's "Car Czar" berated the manager of said fund with an outburst of prose substantially resembling this:

Who the fuck do you think you're dealing with? We'll have the IRS audit your fund. Every one of your employees. Your investors. Then we will have the Securities and Exchange Commission rip through your books looking for anything and everything and nothing we find to destroy you with.

This is what, 115 or so days in? All we can do is point and laugh.

Or cry.

"Muslim Demographics": scare tactics?

Sent to me by e-mail. This is interesting. I haven't researched the figgers, the various nation's fertility rates; but they sound correct from what I've seen in print. I don't really think that increasing birth rates to combat other cultures or religions is a very good idea, given the world's population is approaching saturation. As far as Muslims breeding for world domination, that's funny; has this videographer forgotten the Chinese and the Indians?

Christianity may soon be a forgotten religion, but I don't think the Muslim's religion will prevail, either. Islam's essence is not one of peace, tolerance and forbearance. When usurped by wild-eyed Imams and jihadists, there's not a bloodier religion on the face of the earth.

"Political Correctness is Torture": Andrew Breitbart

Hate crime legislation that's barreling through the identity politics - political-correctness-obsessed Democrat House and Senate has claimed another Republican 'victim', Representative Virginia Foxx (R) NC. The 'Matthew Shepard Act' misappropriates facts and our useless media, using the current climate of intolerance for opposing viewpoints, demands silence and seeks retribution against anyone who seeks only to acknowledge the facts.

We all remember Matthew Shepard. Everyone realizes that his killers needed to receive the death penalty. Or, at least those of us who still remember what 'justice' means, believe that. Since 1998 Matthew Shepard's name has been taken and marketed by various groups and artists to promote their agendas. Did Matthew Shepard die because he was gay? Or did, as Virgina Foxx asks, drug-fueled psychopaths commit this act and Mr. Shepard's name became misappropriated and misused to fuel this unneeded legislation?

Andrew Breitbart writes a powerful opinion piece today in the Washington Times...
Judy Shepard like other tragic symbols Cindy Sheehan, the Jersey Widows and Max Cleland are trotted out by Democrats to make their arguments not with facts and reason but with the threat that if you disagree with them, you will be publicly shamed as a "hater." This pathetic strategy works as Mrs. Foxx's instant apology illustrates.

...

Mrs. Foxx joins me and gay journalist Andrew Sullivan as public figures who refuse to accept the Shepard mythology. We choose not to impugn Mr. Shepard's memory or grant his murderers committed a "hate crime," when it cannot be proved. The left will not accept this because it is built around divisive identity politics. It dismisses "E Pluribus Unum," America's formerly helpful marketing slogan, and promotes strategies that ensure the fault lines of ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation are exploitable for political gain.

On college campuses, in newsrooms and now in the highest corridors of power, with Barack Obama in the Oval Office, the politically correct left is wielding its weaponry with the confidence that it can take down any group, anyone or anything. The thought police are now officially in charge.

The real hate crime these days is the Orwellian intimidation wielded by the left against those that don't think the way they do. It's worse than waterboarding.

What difference would 'hate crime' legislation have made in the sentencing of those two killers? They are put away for life. Would they have received the death penalty, under this new 'hate crimes' laws? No?

Then what freakin' good is it, except to give these candy leftists just another feel-good tool?

Sugar TlTS, part 2 (all in fun, really!)

Two reasons:

Cowboy Blob's Weekend Photo - Caption Contest. The only weekly contest of it's kind that I frequent; Cowboy's been running this contest for years.

RS McCain's "National Offend A Feminist Week".

Two birds with one stone, eh?

(A note on that pshop...I did an earlier version for Dan Collins what, a year or more ago? He put up my original again today at PW. I was wondering how in the world I was going to use 'Goat Grrrl' from Cowboy's contest; and I've learned a few tricks since that original pshop, so let's give this a run.

And no offense intended to any but the hard core, second-wave feminists. You know, the Perez Hilton - Gloria Feldt type... )

Patterico slaps Perez! Perez "Dumb B*tch" Hilton claims copyright; has an embarrassing video removed from YouTube. Not for long. UPDATE! Another slap

...this video, which captures Perez Hilton calling Carrie Prejean a 'dumb b*tch' (she says that, really! The irony, it burns!) Patterico has re-posted...

...with this commentary...

Perez Hilton is the latest thug to use a bogus copyright claim to get an embarrassing video removed from YouTube.

The video in question was produced by the National Organization for Marriage, a group that opposes gay marriage. The one-minute video shows a three-second clip of Hilton, whose real name is Mario Lavandeira, calling Miss California Carrie Prejean a “dumb bitch.” According to copyright lawyer Ben Sheffner, the video has now been removed from YouTube.

These gay fascists have gone all-out to attack Carrie Prejean, with even the mind-numbingly fetid Keith Olberdouche (didn't know he was gay, did you? why, he couldn't hitch a ride on Janeane Garofalo, unless he warmed up with a double-dose of Viagra and a call from Andrew Sullivan promising a follow-up visit afterwards...) and Michael Musto (who?) getting in on the attacks.

If the gays, closet and otherwise, want to make Carrie Prejean's perfectly reasonable respone to a stupid question an even bigger deal, well fine. I don't think there's a majority of Americans who will find Perez (slap a biatch!) Hilton either pleasant company or a credible source. Nassty mud-slinging sewer feeder that he is..

Carrie Prejean, now, there's some always-fine American Pie.

UPDATE!

UPDATE! Laura Ingraham vs. feminist Gloria Feldt (Gloria thinks it's OK to attack another woman's physical attributes, as long as that woman is not a Leftist).

Laura Ingraham, wow, you've dismembered Ms. Feldt (whose smile become more and more unbelievable as the interview progresses). Great job~!

Glenn Beck on Classical Liberalism

From his April 29th radio, discussing "Spineless Specter"...
Everybody is caught in the trap of right, left, conservative, liberal and Democrat/Republican. Forget about that and I'll tell you why we have to forget about it.

...

I contend most Americans are classic liberals. How many in this audience even know what a classic liberal is? In this audience we probably have the highest percentage. Any of talk radio have the highest percentage would know what a classic liberal is. The reason why most people don't know what a classic liberal is, is because of the progressive movement. It was distorted. The progressives distorted liberalism. Classic liberal basically is a libertarian. It is somebody who believes in personal responsibility. It is somebody who believes in the natural rights of man. It is somebody who believes in the self as the first cause or not first cause but the determining factor. It believes in small government. But the progressives latched onto that, and it was distorted. And when they did that and I don't know when they did it and I don't know who did it and I don't know how it came to be, but I will find the answer on that. I believe it was by design and here's why I believe it was by design. Because once you destroy the argument or destroy the place at the table of the classic liberal, of the libertarian, then you're only having a discussion between the same thing, just different paint color. [emphasis mine]
Is being a classical liberal closer to being a classic (as definitions tend to shift) 'libertarian' or to a modern 'conservative'? Is Glenn Beck correct in asserting that there's not a dime's worth of difference between the parties today? Can there be a distinctive line drawn between a Meghan McCain sort of 'Progressive Republican' and non-progressive Democrats ?

Discuss, if you like. (crossed from PW's Pub, where there are Classically-trained Liberals.)

Friday Night Video: TooL, 'Reflection' (featuring Alex Grey imagery)

Anyone who knows me knows I appreciate (and live for!) excellence in imagery. This video features some of Alex Grey's fantastic works (well, he did that Obama Messiah-freak painting I 'fixed' (over there in my sidebar), but that's just the way he rolls. I do wish artists and musicians wouldn't run their freakin' yaps about politics; I can't tell you how many artists - singers - groups that've left my favorites lists because they won't shut up and play.)

I didn't know I was a TooL fan, until this was linked by Carin in a comment over at PW. She's right; this song is as Zen as it gets.

Thanks, Carin. Now I have to go buy the CD or something.

Friday Photo: Desert Hawk

I took this photo way back in, oh, 1985 or so, in the desert near the Superstitions. Just outside of Tempe...I found it while looking for another picture (that I never could find...)

Probably, today, this location is covered with condos or something.

Anyways, if you can't see the hawk in the above picture very well, I lit him up just a bit, in the image to your right here.

Fast on the draw, I was. Not bad for a snapshot.
