Lady Gaga or Marilyn Monroe ?

I know, rhetorical question. Marilyn Monroe is the iconic sweetheart, yesterday's forever darling. Witness this photo; Marilyn Monroe in sand sculpture in St. Petersburg, Russia.

That's carrying power.

Versus our newest "superstar" (by someone's definition, not mine): Lady Gaga on stage yesterday in Chicago.

Can you foresee anyone sand sculpting the Lady Gaga some 48 years after her death? Or even remembering her 10 years from now?

Marilyn Monroe wins the "Classy Babe Forever" contest, dress down. Even '80's Madonna could not keep up with Marilyn Monroe.

Surely there's some better offerings in today's lineup of female "superstars"? Who?

This is really a treat; I don't have an entry every weekend. My bad. I'll try to do better!

  1. Wait, let me get this straight... a cranky old man longs for the good ol' days, and dislikes the new, oversexed pop stars that those durn kids are listening to?

HOLY SHIT, STOP THE PRESSES! THIS IS THE STORY OF THE CENTURY!!

  2. Marilyn was dead before I was old enough to be a fan. The point of the post is that Marilyn is, and always will be, classier.

As usual, these sorts of things SWOOOOOOOSH~! right over your tiny embaldened head.

    Pay attention, son!

  3. Dude. You're old. Who the hell cares what you think? If today's biggest pop stars -- Lady Gaga, Eminem, and the rest -- were the sort of performers who made old duffers like you nod approvingly and blather on about how you think they're pretty keen...

...that would mean that they were doing something very, very wrong. Pop icons are SUPPOSED to turn off old people. Did your parents like Elvis? Didn't think so.

Also, why compare Gaga and Monroe in the first place? One's a singer, one's an actress. Why not compare Monroe to Scarlett Johanssen, and Lady Gaga to, i dunno, Janis Joplin? At least that would make SOME FUCKING SENSE.

  4. "Shut up", he explained.

"Blow me, you punk-ass sucker of goat's cocks, you cousin-fucking slow-witted festering psychotic turd", I rejoined.

    There. Feel all better, now?

  5. Guess I'm old, too. I don't get this Lady Gaga beast. The first time I saw her on the cover of a magazine, I had to ask the cashier what that monstrosity was, and why is it looking at me that way? (I don't have cable, or any friends under 30, so I really had no idea yet.) I finally watched a video. Still don't get it. She (is this really a she?) didn't hurt my ears or anything, but I don't see what the fuss is all about.

  6. Lady Gaga prolly has her fans. My immediate younger family and their connects aren't amongst them. Meh.

I think she's a big city-deep cessburg thinger. Whereas Marilyn Monroe crosses lines and stands up to the passage of time, Lady Gaga, like Madonna, likely won't.

  7. whoa, elf, did someone saltpeter your cheerios?

Hey, I'm officially "old"... my rock idols included The Doors, The Stones, Styx, CCR, Clapton ...

and my mom enjoyed my music!

Celebs can be either from music or film -- it's all entertainment media, and the lasting power depends a lot on how much generational crossover there is. An appeal, as it were, to timeless standards.

Monroe's combination of earthy sexiness WITHOUT cynicism appeals to men and women alike.

To many of today's female celebs have hard edges. They may titillate for the shortterm, but have no lasting appeal.

    IMHO, of course!
